Frequently Asked Questions

How do I assign the IP address to X4 NAS plus™ once it is powered on and live on the network?

After running X4 NAS plus Setup Utility, the X4 NAS icon appears on the Setup Utility window.

1. Select the icon and click on Set IP.
2. The TCP/IP parameters appear. Enter the IP address and other appropriate parameters.
3. Click on OK.
What do "root squash" and "all squash" mean when setting up NFS Access?

Root squashing and all squashing are mechanisms under the UNIX operating system for providing security to NFS file system access on the network. If root squashing is enabled, X4 NAS plus does not allow users with user ID 0 from another system or network to mount the file system with user ID 0. Instead, it maps user ID 0 to another user ID with minimal access privileges so that he has controlled access to resources.

All squashing does the same kind of mapping but for all users who access resources on X4 NAS plus. For a detailed explanation, please refer to documentation on exports command under Linux Operating system.

How do I make X4 NAS plus a part of the Windows Domain so that I can assign permissions for users in the Windows Domain?
1. Open X4 NAS plus Manager as a root user.
2. Go to Network Configuration and click on Microsoft Networking.
3. Select the Domain out of workgroup/domain names mentioned on the page.
4. Enter the Windows NT/2000 net bios domain name in domain name box.
5. Enter the net bios name of the Domain controller in the domain controller box.
6. Click on Apply. X4 NAS plus is now a part of Windows Domain.

NOTE: Please make sure that you have already created an entry for this X4 NAS plus with the same name in Windows domain controller.

If Domain controller is Windows 2000, please also reset the account once before clicking on Apply.

How do I control access to X4 NAS plus files from user access through HTTP?

By using HTTP Support feature, you can enable or disable HTTP access to files existing on X4 NAS plus. See Network Configuration > HTTP Support in X4 NAS plus Manager.

Also by using an enhanced feature called Web Root, you can control which X4 NAS plus directory is visible for users using HTTP access.

How do I check for data consistency at regular intervals on X4 NAS plus?

X4 NAS plus provides a feature called Consistency Check and Repair.

Using this feature, you can schedule or immediately check and repair data consistency on X4 NAS plus.

This feature can be accessed under Storage Management > Consistency Check and Repair in X4 NAS plus Manager.

How do I shut down X4 NAS plus remotely?
1. Start X4 NAS plus Setup Utility from any PC on the network.
2. Select the desired X4 NAS plus from the Setup Utility window.
3. Click on Power Off.

The X4 NAS plus system safely shuts down its operating system and switches off the power.

Why does the Overtemp Fan show a status of Idle instead of OK on the Server Status page of X4 NAS plus Manager?

The function of the Overtemp Fan is to run only when the temperature inside the X4 NAS plus enclosure is over 60 degrees Celcius and when there is a hardware failure.

So the Idle status means there are no overtemp problems.

Troubleshooting

Although X4 NAS plus is powered and the POWER LED shows on, the X4 NAS plus Setup Utility is not able to identify and display the X4 NAS plus icon.

Check the following:

1. At least one of the Ethernet ports on the backside of X4 NAS plus should have an Ethernet cable connected to it.
2. The other end of the Ethernet cable must be connected to a local network switch.
3. The computer which is running X4 NAS plus setup utility program must also have connectivity to the switch.
In the X4 NAS plus Setup Utility, when I select the appropriate X4 NAS plus and click on Web Manager, my browser is not able to access the X4 NAS plus Manager interface.

This happens if you change the X4 NAS plus name from within X4 NAS plus Manager and did not reboot.

1. Restart X4 NAS plus by clicking on Reboot from X4 NAS plus Setup Utility.
2. Once X4 NAS plus is restarted, click on Rescan from the X4 NAS plus Setup Utility.
3. When the X4 NAS plus icon appears on the Setup Utility, select it and click on Web Manager again to open X4 NAS plus Manager.
When I try to add an IP address to a volume share on the Storage Management > NFS Access page, I get an "ERROR 3" message. The NFS access to the share folder that you are working on has probably been disabled. Enable NFS Access and then retry assigning IP address permissions.
